Chinese, as a Second Language

I was the original editor and writer for this series: Interactive Chinese (meaning Chinese as a second language). Needless to say, we didn't have much of a market for the series in Taiwan. The textbook was sold all over Europe as well as the United States, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, India, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan.

One of the concerns I had as the writer and translator was to make the Chinese to English translations as exact as possible. My Taiwanese editors would complain, saying my work should simply be fluent. I knew, as a learner of Chinese as a second language, that the words in the translations should match up exactly. Adults learners want exact translations.

Down the Road from Jiufen, Jinguashi Awaits

I recently wrote this story on Jinguashi (金瓜石), near Jiufen (九份), for Culture Taiwan. It's entitled Down the Road from Jiufen, Jinguashi Awaits: http://goo.gl/hFP0K.

I did it from an historical angle, looking at the Crown Prince's Chalet and the World War Two POW (prisoner of war) camp situated in this valley.

Taiwan Hospice Headline

I've been editing Taiwan Hospice Headline for the past five years. There are some pretty good stories that come along, like this one, which I posted on Patrick Cowsill Wanhua Taiwan (my other blog): http://patrick-cowsill.blogspot.com/2008/05/taiwan-hospice-headline.html

Here's a link to Taiwan Hospice Headline's website: http://www.hospice.org.tw/2009/chinese/index.php. The mail out the publication the old-fashioned way too. Just contact them at hospice@ms1.mmh.org.tw

Practical Business Correspondence

I took this shot of Practical Model Business English, which someone had chucked on the living room floor. I helped to write and edit it a couple of years back. It's actually a pretty good book, full of useful vocabulary, and typical letters and scenarios a businessperson might write or face. I've recommended it to a few companies I work for as a letter editor. The people who bought Practical Model Business English told me it has helped them.
